Reviving my Western Digital MyBook

The last time that I’ve backed up my pictures and family videos was Feburary 13 of this year.  I’ve uploaded hours of video and tons of WDpics to my Western Digial MyBook World Edition NAS that sat quietly in my basement.

I had two of them sitting side by side.  One would back up to the other … when the backups worked properly.  Unfortunately, I’ve been too busy over the past few months to check on the backups to make sure that they were happening.  True to Murphey’s law, they weren’t.

The drive stopped responding on my network this morning.  This sent me into a panic.  I reset the device and it started responding again for about 10 minutes then fell off the network again.  This repeated about 4 times before I finally called it a failure.  The drive just spun down and went silent each time.

So, I took the case off and disassembled the contents.  It revealed a standard 500GB SATA Western Digital WD5000AAKS drive.I placed the drive into a Windows 7 box in the living room and noticed that it was using linux partitions and that they would not be readable in Windows.  GRRR!

So, I put the drive back together into the MyBook and it started working again!!!  I immediately ran out and bought a 1TB SimpleDrive from BestBuy and now I’m backing EVERYTHING up as fast as I can before the drive decides to stop spinning again.
